The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the most beautiful houses of worship of Chernivtsi. This church was founded by the Ukrainian, Tadey Turkul, the boyar of Bukovina. In 1814 he devised all his personal and real property to the Greek-Catholic community. For money earned from selling his estate a church was built in 1821 that was consecrated in honour of St. Tadey.
At the beginning of XX century the church already could not accommodated all the believers, so in the 30th it was rebuilt under the project of Volodymyr Zalozetskyi, a famous fine art expert and public figure. He managed to combine harmonically the space of the old and new part of the building.
At the end of XX the church interior was decorated by polychromic painting. A wonderworking icon of Chernivtsi Mother of God is in this cathedral.
Among the parishioners there were famous cultural and political figures such as professors of Chernivtsi University Ihnatii Onyshkevych and Stepan Smal-Stotskyi, prominent writers of Bukovina Yurii Fedkovich, Olha Kobylianska and Iryna Vilde.
