ABOUT THE LOCATION

The quay is one of the most romantic places in Kherson.

History:

Kherson quay was developed along with the development of Kherson. The city was created not as a resort, but as a shipyard and port, and it began with the quay, where ships landed. Naturally, the quay was built near the pier, but it didn’t resemble the modern quay. At the end of the 18th century it was covered with wooden boards. However floods created many problems for the development of ports and worsened epidemiological situation. Therefore, in 1834-1839 the rock embankment was built. Several private quays and retail warehouses were located there. The problem of flooding has always troubled Kherson, so it was necessary to build adjacent to the embankment roads. That work started in the 1860’s. A contemporary wrote then: «The road that runs along the waterfront near the quay was a swamp that never dried out».

Rapid economic development in the region contributed to the growth of Kherson port. On the one hand service facilities of the port developed, and on the other in 1932 Kherson bakery complex was built. Therefore sandwiched between those buildings the quay was discontinuous and small. But by 1989 it acquired its modern shapes. And in 1972 on the site of the shipyard where first ships of Russian Black Sea Fleet were built, a monument to shipbuilders was built. Locals call this monument «Fregat».

In 2008 after the reconstruction three-color paving tiles, lamps and benches, light and music fountain were constructed. Several stair descents to the water were built and the piers were repaired. Today one can get from the quay to the Dnieper marshy and reedy banks by motorboat in a matter of minutes. Just out of the city center into the wild.

About the project

Find & Follow is a travel project of the telecom operator Vodafone Ukraine. The main goal is to support the development of domestic tourism, local communities, small businesses and the creation of digital infrastructure for travel in Ukraine. Innovative pedestrian QR-routes are available in Kyiv, Lviv, Chernivtsi, Poltava, Cherkasy, Uzhhorod and Kherson. Routes consist of signs with QR-codes, which are placed near cultural and historical monuments, and arrows indicating the path. Having read the code on the plate, the tourist receives all the necessary information about the place near which he is. We add Village Tours to our country trips. These are weekend routes through Ukrainian villages, where it is safe, sparsely populated, incredibly interesting and beautiful.
