Public Bank

ABOUT THE LOCATION

In the second half of the XIX century, with the development of industry and trade, the branches of banks sprang up in Cherkasy. They played a major role in the further development of the city. Public Bank opened one of the first. It was two-story brick building, built in 1914 by the project of a famous architect V. Gorodetskyi. The entrance to the building is distinguished by the dynamic bands forming around the doorway a picture resembling the butterfly wings. The upper central part of the building ends with a dome of original shape. The house is decorated with forged bars on balconies and roofs. One could feel that decorative decision was inspired by the architectural style of modernism with the use of separate elements of neo-renaissance. In the Soviet period there was a bank, the educational building of the Cherkasy Pedagogical Institute, and since January 1954—the premises of Cherkaska Pravda newspaper. A well-known Ukrainian poet and journalist, one of the brightest representatives of the generation «Sixtiers»–Vasyl Symonenko worked there. Now there is the editorial office of the newspaper “Cherkaskyi krai” (“Cherkasy region”) and the museum of V. Symonenko.
