Locals call it “Vozdvizhenka”. It is situated in “Gonchari-Kozhumiaky” area. This cozy and hidden from city noise place has long been inhabited by people. During the times of Kyiv Rus, on the Old Kyiv Hill), a princely castle with fortifications was located, and Podil was the most active district. There was a wharf and a market, and in the area there were settlements of craftsmen – potters and dredgers, whose shops existed here until the end of the 19th century. In those days, Kyiv was glorious with the products of its masters – beautiful dishes, painted patterns, exquisite jewelry. In 1748 a wooden church was built and it was set to fire in 1811. A the result a stone temple of the Exaltation of the Cross of the Lord was laid on this very place, from which now the street and the neighbourhood “Vozdvyzhenskaya” takes its name.
