“Koleso” Theatre

ABOUT THE LOCATION

In the evenings, when walking along the Andrew’s Descent and approaching the house number 8, you can hear a mysterious and emotional whim. These are the sounds of the “Koleso” (trans – “Wheel”) theater, from which the viewers are coming out enthusiasticly thinking about the “aftertaste” and the impression of the performance. They do not even guess what conceals the walls of this house, who they remember and what secrets are kept behind the door, where the theatrical bell calles the audience.
Today it is a theater, but once a long time ago, here used to be a mansion with two dwellings, built in 1885 and 1902, and it was the property of a Kyiv jeweler Vasily Chernyavsky. Each floor has its own entrance, so that the inhabitants would not bother each other. Now in the basement there is a theater cafe, and the stairs, which raise the audience to the main hall, once were used only by the inhabitants of the upper floor.
In Soviet times there were communal apartments here. In 1988, after moving away the inhabitants, the house came to the theater. The beauty embodied in the theatrical art, still “holds” the old building. Every night, a magic bell sounds, the curtain of the theater goes up … and the performance starts.
