The Armenian Cathedral

ABOUT THE LOCATION

You are standing in front of the main entrance to the Armenian Cathedral. The Armenian Cathedral is located within the boundaries of the old city center – a medieval city surrounded by the thick stone walls, – on the territory of the Ensemble of the historic center, listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Armenian Cathedral ensemble includes the Armenian Cathedral, the bell tower, the palace of the Armenian Archbishop, the Armenian Bank, the Armenian Benedictine monastery, the memorial column of St. Christoph and the Altar of Calvary. The Armenian cathedral was built in 1363-1527. As you can see, the construction has lasted for more than a century. The Armenian community in ancient Lviv was one of the largest in Europe after Venice and Amsterdam. The Armenians lived in a secluded community, headed by the wit and the council of elders, consisting of the 12 most wealthy burghers. The interior of the oldest part of the temple is richly painted with ornaments, consisting of typical Armenian patterns, carved in stone, and alabaster images of the stylized Armenian crosses. Pay your attention to the unique frescoes on the window slopes, to your right. These preserved fragments are the oldest examples of monumental paintings in Lviv. Above the altar section there is a dome decorated with a mosaic, designed by Jozef Megoffer. The Holy Trinity image is depicted there. On the main altar there is an icon of the Virgin Mary with little Jesus. In general, there are very few icons in this church, which makes it similar to a Catholic temple. In the altar part of the temple you can see a fresco with the image of “The Last Supper”.
