The Lviv Opera House and Shevchenko Monument

ABOUT THE LOCATION

The construction of this gorgeous building in the very heart of Lviv lasted for three years and in the year 1900 The Lviv Opera House was solemnly opened. It was designed by the talented architect Zygmunt Gorgolewski. The most famous legend of Lviv occurred immediately after the architect had died. The legend says that Gorgolewski committed suicide in a year after the construction had been completed. He did it because the underground waters, flowing right under the theater, made it get cracked. But the truth is that the architect had built the durable concrete vaulting for the Plotva River underground waters, and he died of completely different reason. The first Director of The Opera House was Tadeush Pawlikowski, who was so deeply in love with opera that donated his own money to cover the theater’s expenses. As numerous gala performances and receptions required piles of money, Pawlikowski had to sell his mansion to bail his theater out of financial failure. The Lviv Opera House is full of its romantic tragedies as well. In the early 20th century a famous ophthalmologist Bzhezinski committed suicide because he did not succeed in love affair with The Theater’s singer. In 1912 a famous Lviv’s ladies’man, lawyer and banker Stanislav Lewitski because of his unbearable jealousy shot death his married lover, who was an actor of The Theater, named Yanina Oginska-Shenderovich. Even sculpures have their legends at The Lviv Opera House. Thus, the subject of one of the arguments was statue Fame, which is located on the front facade of the building. University Professor Mars, whose speciality was obstetrics and gynaecology, once bet his scientific honour with his friends that the statue Fame is on the 4th month of pregnancy, taking into account her round-shape belly. To prove his rightness, he found the sculptor and took from him an address of his model. Eventually, he found the model and it was found out she had a child. The date of birth of the child proved conclusively that the statue Fame of The Lviv Opera House is on the 4th mounth of pregnancy.
