Maria Zankovetska Theater

ABOUT THE LOCATION

In 1776 the first permanent mobile theater in Ukraine was founded in Lviv, and later in the first half of the 19th century on the same Teatralna street the first stationary theater in Lviv was founded in the building of the former Franciscans’ Monastery. The theater, which you can see in front of you, now has the name of Maria Zankovetska National Academic Ukrainian Drama Theater (previous name is Count Stanislav Skarbek Theater). The main investor of the project was an entrepreneur and philanthropist Count Stanislav Skarbek, and the architects of the original project were Ludwig Pichl and Johann Salzman. The construction of the theater lasted from 1836 to 1842. S. Skarbek did not regret to give the perennial oaks from his own forests to solve the problem of marshy soil in the place, where the theater was supposed to be. As a result, 16,000 piles today effectively keep the foundation of the building from collapse and distortion.
