Uzhgorod Castle and Transcarpathian Museum of Local Lore, History and Economy

ABOUT THE LOCATION

About the sight:

Uzhgorod Castle is the oldest and most precious piece of architecture in the city.

History:

The earliest fortifications on the Castle hill were built a very long time ago — in the late 11th century. At that time Kyivan Rus’ came to existence. Fortifications turned into a settlement headed by the legendary Prince Laborts. However Slavic principality didn’t last long. After some time Uzhgorod came to be under the reign of Hungarian kings. Later it was destroyed by Tatars. After such a defeat the construction of a stone castle began. There are documents dated back to the 13th century where the new castle Ung (Unguivar) was mentioned. The further fate of the castle was closely connected to Uzhgorod history. And in 1318 the 390-year long reign of Italian aristocrats the Drugeths began. They were invited by the Hungarian king and ruled the castle.

The castle was attacked many times. There was a huge fire which heavily damaged the buildings. The castle has also changed its architectural style.

Today it looks exactly as it looked in the middle of the 17th century. Unfortunately the five-tier garden near the castle, with rare flowers, bushes and trees, decorated with a fountain, doesn’t exist anymore.

Nowadays on the castle premises there is the Museum of Local Lore, History and Economy. It boasts one of the richest collections of bronze archaeological excavations in Ukraine, as well as a unique numismatic collection with more than 12 thousand units of the ancient money. There are rare handwritten books such as Psalter of the 14th century and The New Testament of 1401.

About the project

Find & Follow is a travel project of the telecom operator Vodafone Ukraine. The main goal is to support the development of domestic tourism, local communities, small businesses and the creation of digital infrastructure for travel in Ukraine. Innovative pedestrian QR-routes are available in Kyiv, Lviv, Chernivtsi, Poltava, Cherkasy, Uzhhorod and Kherson. Routes consist of signs with QR-codes, which are placed near cultural and historical monuments, and arrows indicating the path. Having read the code on the plate, the tourist receives all the necessary information about the place near which he is. We add Village Tours to our country trips. These are weekend routes through Ukrainian villages, where it is safe, sparsely populated, incredibly interesting and beautiful.
