The monument to Avgustyn Voloshyn — the President of Carpathian Ukraine, known public figure, Hero of Ukraine.
History:
Uzhgorod residents and visitors enjoy walking along Uzhgorod embankments. Here there is the longest in Europe 2.2 km long linden alley. Not far from it there is a monument to Avgustyn Voloshyn a famous teacher, religious, social and political figure of the 20s and 30s of the last century. On March 15, 1939 he was elected the President of the new independent state — Carpathian Ukraine. But this independence was not meant to be as Carpathian Ukraine was occupied by foreigners, and Voloshyn had to emigrate. In 1945 he was captured in Prague by the secret police troops. Later he was murdered in one of Moscow prisons. To crown his name in immortality Uzhgorod citizens established this monument. It pictures Voloshyn with one hand holding a scroll with the law that Carpathian Ukraine is an independent state, and with the other hand raised for the blessing. Although it is a custom to give a blessing with the right hand, Voloshyn is shown doing it with his left hand.
Still further from the linden alley on the corner of Independence embankment there is one more monument to Jon Lord, Deep Purple frontman. This unusual monument is located on the embankment railings and it is considered to be one of the best mini-sculptures in Uzhgorod. It was established exactly in the place where the older generation came together to listen to rock music. The singer with long hair in glasses, wearing a vest and shoes with heels, with a cigarette in his hand is thoughtfully looking at the river Uzh which in fact he has never seen.
