Uzhgorod cultural and historical center Owl’s Nest

ABOUT THE LOCATION

Owl’s Nest is an architectural monument of national importance. Its building is a valuable example of facilities used for economic activities in the late 18th century.

History:

Much is unknown and mysterious in the history of a former brewery, and now a cultural and historical center called Owl’s Nest. For instance it is still unknown when exactly this building was built. Although the inscription on the facade indicates 1781, there are documentary evidence that in 1631 the brewery has already been working in the city. It is also strange that the brewery building looks more like a strong feudal fortress than a commercial building. The brewery building got its name from the name of the hotel Owl’s Nest located there at the end of the 19th century. But in Hungarian it had a slightly different name Bogolvar, which is literally translates as City of Owls.

The building itself was suitable for anything. There was a brewery, and a hotel and a joinery school, a ceramic college, and a warehouse, which stored grain and vodka, wool and lard. There was a wine cellar there too and this is not surprising, as from the 18th century Transcarpathian wine was very popular in Europe. It was exported to Prussia, Russia and Poland.

Today Owl’s Nest is a popular venue for various festivals, fairs and, of course, wine tasting.

Legends:

According to one of the legends, Owl’s Nest was built by prisoners. And they were building not quite a wine cellar but a prison with its thick walls. The rumor has it that in the halls where people drink wine today there were cells for prisoners.
