The monument to Peter I

ABOUT THE LOCATION

The monument was created in 1915 owing to the money, raised by alumni of Petrovsky Poltava Cadet Corps. It was intended for the main hall of the institution, where the sculpture was located until Petrovsky Poltava Cadet Corps was disbanded in 1919. The monument was installed in front of the building of Poltava Battle History Museum in 1950. It is a bronze sculpture in Peter’s height. The pedestal of the monument is made from black labradorite.

Peter is depicted in the uniform of an officer of Preobrazhensky Regiment at the time of his allocution to soldiers before the battle. Tsar’s hand lies on a scroll with the following text: “One should remember that Peter doesn’t value his own life, let only Russia flourish and Russia’s piety, fame and welfare grow”. The sculpture height is 2.04 m.

The pedestal dimensions: height 2.08 m, the base 4.3 x 4.65 m. There is a cartouche on the front side of the pedestal with inscription “Peter the First 1672 – 1725″.

 

Legend:

Sculptor A. Adamson, working on the image of Peter I, used the myth of Peter’s extraordinary physical strength, and showed his well-built broad shouldered physique. In fact, standing at 2.04 meters, Peter had clothes size 48 (or 38 in USA) and shoes size 42 (or 9 in USA and England), making him tall and lean.
