St. Peter and Paul chapel

ABOUT THE LOCATION

In 1904 – 1907 the restoration works of Common grave of Muscovite soldiers were carried out. Under its weight (about 2 tons) the cross began to sink. That’s why the burial mound was opened; the foundation of the memorial was reinforced; and a granite spherical vault was built with an inner chapel of St. Peter and Paul. Marble plaques, listing the Muscovite regiments, which participated in the Battle of Poltava, were also placed there. Consecration of the chapel took place on the 3rd of September 1907. The chapel had refined decoration: marble iconostasis, silver candlesticks, icon lamps and church chandeliers. But in 1918 the chapel was repeatedly robbed. In 1930s the grave chapel was turned into a storage facility for fuel and chemicals of Pig breeding research institute. In 1939 the grave and the chapel redecoration works were conducted. In honor of 230th anniversary of the Battle of Poltava a small exhibition was opened inside of the chapel, where one could see paintings and flags, related to Poltava battle. After the anniversary celebrations the chapel was turned into fuel storage facility again. To the 300th anniversary of the Battle of Poltava the chapel restoration works were carried out at the cost of LLC “Factor Capital”; the Employer – the Capital Construction Executive Committee of Poltava City Council.
